The Kowa Calo 140, a top-of-the-line interchangeable lens camera released in September 1959, is famous for being the first lens-shutter camera in the world to feature a large-aperture 50mm f/1.4 lens.
The Prominar lens produces stunning images, described as "a lens that emphasizes tonal reproduction and beautiful gradations over resolution, with good contrast from the open aperture, and sharp images even in the corners when slightly stopped down" (from Spiral).
The exterior shows no significant dents, scratches, or dirt. There is a slight gap between the top and bottom of the body.
The shutter lever action is a bit stiff. Low speeds are not consistent. The shutter speeds are accurate. The lens aperture and focus movements are good.
Optically, the viewfinder has some clouding. The lens was overhauled last December and is very clear with no noticeable scratches or clouding.
A filter is included.
This is a rare, well-preserved item from over 65 years ago.
